INTENTIONS OF THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER

General Intentions : read them in the web page; www.rioporlavida.net

“Mother Theresa said: …

“God tells us:
Even if a mother could forget her child, I will not forget you. I have carved you in the palm of my hand."
Abortion goes against the commandment of love.
Every country that accepts abortion is a country of people that has not learned to love,
but seeks violence to obtain what it wants.

PRAYER TO SAINT RAYMOND NONNATUS

Oh glorious intercessor, Saint Raymond, model of charity with the poor and the needed.
Here I am humbly kneeled at your feet to implore your help in my needs.
It was your great joy to aid the poor and the needed of the earth, come to my rescue,
I beg of you glorious Saint Raymond, in my affliction.
To you oh glorious protector I ask that you may bless the child I carry in my womb.
Protect me and the child of my womb now and during delivery which is soon approaching.
I promise to raise him up following the commandments of God.
Amen

+ ABORTION: The Health Commission of the Legislature of Buenos Aires signed a dispatch with majority of lawmakers signatures to regulate the practice of abortions with no penalty in the Capital which gives the possibility of killing the unborn babies (DEATH PENALTY) to all the cases of rape, even when the rape is only a supposition, without reporting such case in the police department. It also allows that every woman that has been raped may ask for an abortion from the age of 14, without her parents or a legal guardian's consent. A girl of 14 may go all alone to the hospital, denounce a rape and ask for an abortion without the company of her parents. Some lawmakers will not support this project alleging that the Legislature cannot interpret a national law, like the Penal Code and because of the content of it.

Buenos Aires, August 20 th

Fr. Victor Manuel Fernandez:

A fetus runs the risk of being despised, as does everything that is small and apparently useless. But truth is more than how it appears. Biology states that the fertilized egg is not the joining of the egg and the sperm. It is a new human being, original, different from his father and mother. Genetics indicate that the DNA of the recently fertilized egg contains all the characteristics that the human person will have as an adult. It is exactly what he will become when he grows up. He only needs to be able to have the opportunity to develop all his full potential. That is why from the moment of his conception he has the rights of a human being, principally the inviolable right to life.

If the reason trying to justify his elimination is his incomplete development, this gives the strong a reason to eliminate the weak or less developed people. In fact, in the colonization of the Americas some people felt that they had the authority to kill the Indians because to them, they didn't look quite human. Let us remember the Nazis, when they singled out other races that for them were of a lower quality, deserving destruction. In the same way, there are those who welcome the idea of eliminating disabled people for not being fully developed. But it is not hose who are fully developed who have the right to decide who is human and who doesn't have a right to live.

Here we get to the center of this problem which invites us not to take lightly the issue of abortion. Let us think thoroughly. If only the “developed” people have rights, with what solid argument will we be able to give an indisputable human rights to the weakest amongst us? The defense of human life requires principles that should never be subject of discussion, so to be sure that the atrocities of the last century may never take place again. The only way to establish these firm principles, is to maintain that human life is always sacred, from conception to natural death. Otherwise, the shrewd and powerful will find smart excuses to eliminate the one that bothers them because the person is considered less developed: the people with deformities, people from the slums, the elderly, the undocumented, the demented, the suspicious Arab, etc.

If we look at it from the point of view of women's rights, it is indispensable to state that the life of the pregnant woman is as valuable as the life of the defenseless unborn that is trying to see the light of day. Can this woman decide freely on the other fragile woman she is carrying in her womb, only because the unborn woman isn't fully developed? In every healthy political system, the one who has power uses it to defend those with lesser power. That is why, even as a “progressive coherence”, abortion is not viable as a solution. I also think it is a incoherence that someone that rejects abortion, at the same time washes his hands on helping the marginalized or supports terrible preventive wars. There is much hypocrisy, absolutely. But let us not make the innocent pay for it.

Here we have something that dignifies itself immensely: the passion for human dignity that one can see in a mother who is fighting against all odds for the life of her disabled son, when at the same time there are those who secretly think this life is useless. Or the passion felt by others who try to help preserve the life of the Indians in the jungle that apparently don't give anything back to society. Or that sublime obsession of some physicians who battle against death to preserve the life of a 90 year old lady, even if to retain her amongst us for some months more. They think that every human life is infinitely valuable and is to be taken care of, beyond their development, beyond their utility, beyond every annoying circumstance. It is the same for that miracle of pregnancy, for that new human being that is trying to grow in the womb of her mother. Who knows if that baby may be another Einstein or another Mother Theresa of Calcuta? It doesn't matter if he was conceived by a rape or by two lovers' encounter. It is him, he is unique, and has the right to be here. A society that decides to eliminate him to prevent other problems is putting itself in a risky situation.

A mother who has given birth to a disabled baby, in spite of her suffering, understands that the solution is not found in killing the child. Answers will always have to be found elsewhere, not in death. In some places it is tolerated for a pregnant woman to abort her baby if there is supposition that the child is disabled. Then what strong arguments may we need to defend the disabled who already lives from being eliminated? Birth per-se doesn't establish an essential difference, doesn't draw a clear line between a non-human life an a human life. What changes the fact of being out of the womb? A child doesn't begin to be a human being magically when given birth, nor when he passes the third month of gestation barrier. He who pretends to determine when in his development a person can be eliminated will be to consider himself God. This is not set up as a religious issue but a healthy humanism.

The situation of many poor women who have been raped is dramatic. They don't usually count with the help and support needed to confront their anguish. They need much help and company to help carry on with their unwanted pregnancy, even when they may finally give their child to adoption. We are not caring for the victim creating another victim. The solution to the problem is not found in confronting the woman with that fragile unborn life being gestated inside her, as if it where a simple pimple or tumor. Is it so that the little one has the fault of what is going on, as to make him responsible?

In a place that things are solve in this way, life's value becomes relative and introduces in society's underground, a superfluous under appreciation for human life. This finally translates in the incapacity to recognize the other as a person. This hides a dark dynamism that causes social degradation. Let us keep our heads held high.
